British pop star Leona Lewis says she had to fight back tears when she performed at former South African president Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday tribute concert here.
The singer joined an all-star line-up, including Amy Winehouse and Razorlight, at the concert in Hyde Park on June 27.
Lewis sang hits like Bleeding Love and Better In Time at the gala event.
She said, “It was a really emotional moment for me. There were definitely a few tears. My auntie and grandmother would tell me stories about Nelson Mandela. I never dreamed I would be up there singing at his birthday celebration. It was very emotional performing for him.”

Leona Lewis is charging £1 million for personal appearances less than 18 months after winning the Xfactor.
The huge fee puts the 23-year-old Londoner in the same pay league as some of the world’s biggest stars such as Sir Paul McCartney.
Shortly after winning the 2006 Xfactor the Bleeding Love star sang at 40th birthday party in Scotland for an undisclosed sum.
Since then Leona’s career has rocketed. Her debut album Spirit reached number one in the UK and America.
But Leona, worth £6 million, gives away much of her cash to charity including the Teenage Cancer Trust.

“Leona is one of the most sought after stars around. She has little say in the fee charged big money sponsors literally name their fee and her management response accordingly.
“She is adamant much of the profit goes straight back to her favourite charities.”

Leona gave an another amazing performance at the concert in honour of Nelson Mandela’s 90th Birthday on June 27.I do gotta say : she looked absolutely stunning. The dress is just amazing and I love her whole styling - from the head to the sweet shoes. And yes, take a look at Leona’s left hand. There is a diamond ring.God knows if the rumors that she and Lou are engaged are true or not, but anyhow - this is her personal life and she deserves to keep it private
