Think of spectacular British-born singer Leona Lewis as an “Eliza Doolittle” for our time. Her accent in conversation is pure East London Cockney but transforms into a gloriously clear My Fair Lady voice when she sings. When I asked about this startling change, she laughed.
“I know, it’s really weird,” the 23-year-old singer said, hardly offended but truly amused by the contradiction. “People tell me that all the time. I think it’s the trained singer’s ear. I sing what I hear in the song. Talking, I speak the sounds in my head.”
Lewis won The X Factor, Britain’s big Idol show, and held the No. 1 spot on the Billboard charts this spring with her song “Bleeding Love.” She was in New York recently but developed a sore throat, forcing her to change our breakfast plans and fly back to London. The next day, she sent me a bottle of wine with the sweetest note. Good penmanship on personalized stationery—the sort of gesture reporters rarely get. Obviously, she’s a kid with manners as well as talent.
I updated the gallery with photoshots of our Lovely Leona from her Company and Glamour photoshoots I believe. I decided to add all of the photos into one folder. Happy viewing!
Ryan Schinman, founder and chief executive of Platinum Rye Entertainment, the world’s largest broker of celebrity talent, models, recording artists, sports figures and other celebrities for ad campaigns and publicity events, says the stigma that once kept Hollywood’s A-list from promoting goods is all but nonexistent today. “There are only 20 or 25 stars who won’t do it,” he says. The dwindling list includes Bruce Springsteen and Jack Nicholson
Another bold-face starlet to watch: Leona Lewis, a 23-year-old British-born singer-songwriter who walked away the winner on Simon Cowell’s British TV talent show The X Factor in late 2006. Lewis’ debut album, Spirit, was released in the United States in April, and shot straight to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart of top-selling albums.
For Lewis, Schinman envisions a multi-platform cellphone deal. It would include Leona Lewis ringtones, sponsorship rights and personal appearances as well as her likeness in advertising. His rationale: “She has beauty, personality and talent–a rare triple threat in the music industry.” Source: Forbes.com
